Depois de mais um ano de treino e de trabalho, já cheirava a Verão quando e eu, juntamente com meu companheiro de armas, o Pedro, estávamos a caminho do aeroporto da Portela, com destino a Boston (E.U.A) e à Sede da YMAA, para mais um mês de treino duro…

Another year of training and working passed, smelled Summer time when I, along with my friend, Pedro, we were on the way to the airport, with destination to Boston (USA) and to Headquarters of YMAA , for another month of hard training ...

Em Boston revimos o Mestre Yang e muitos outros amigos: George Dominguez, Ramel Romes, Jeffrey Pratt, Narcyz Latecki, James O'Leary, Tai Ngo, James Yang, , Bruce Crawford, Kathy Yang, Nicholas Yang, Ravi Dixit, Simon Pang, David Tsai e muitos mais…Foi um mês em grande, cheio de aventuras e peripécias. Sem dúvida, Boston foi para nós, a primeira grande referência como escola de Artes Marciais e um conjunto infindável de novas realidades, no mundo das Artes Marciais Chinesas.

At Boston, we met again with Master Yang and many other friends, from our last time there: George Dominguez, Ramel Romes, Jeffrey Pratt, Narcyz Latecki, James O'Leary, Tai Ngo, James Yang, Bruce Crawford, Kathy Yang, Nicholas Yang, Ravi Dixit, Simon Pang, David Tsai and many others... It was a great month, full of adventures and episodes. Without any doubt, Boston was for us, the first major reference as school of Martial Arts and an endless group of new realities in the world of Chinese Martial Arts.

Boston, Agosto de 1995: foi o nosso segundo ano consecutivo na Sede da YMAA, para mais um mês de treino e de dureza máxima! Foi nesta passagem por Boston que conhecemos Karol Lubecki e Marek Sadowski, Instrutores Polacos. Que tenrinhos aqueles dois polskas!... Desde então, a nossa amizade foi-se consolidando, criando fortes laços de amizade com a YMAA Polónia, que perduram ainda hoje. A dureza do treino era de tal forma intensa que não havia espaço para “larguezas”, vejam só a nossa forma física…nem uma grama de gordura!

Boston, August of 1995: it was our second consecutive year at the YMAA Headquarters, for another month of hard training! It was at this time that we met Karol Lubeck and Marek Sadowski, polkas instructors. What a sissies this two polkas...! From this day, our friendship has been consolidated, creating strong ties of friendship with YMAA Poland, which persist even today. The training was so intense and hard that there was no space for “size large”, look to our physical form...not even a gram of fat!

Durante a nossa estadia em Boston, tivemos a oportunidade de estar presentes nos Nacionais dos EUA, que se realizaram no fim-de-semana anterior, e onde os atletas do Mundial aproveitaram para rodar. Mais de oito áreas de competição simultânea, impressionavam qualquer um. Lá embarcámos, juntamente com a equipa YMAA Boston, em dez horas de viagem traduzidas em 650km de carro até Baltimore. Foi o maior campeonato que já tínhamos visto. Algo mesmo gigante, com centenas de atletas e com uma riqueza e variedade de Kungfu descomunal…

During our stay in Boston, we had the opportunity to be present at the U.S. Nationals, held at the weekend before the World Champion. More than eight areas of competition simultaneously, impressed everyone. We boarded in this adventure, along with the team of YMAA Boston, in ten hours of travel and up 650km drive to Baltimore. It was the largest tournament that we had already seen. Something real big, with hundreds of athletes and with a richness and variety phenomenal of Kungfu ...

Pedro Rodrigues e Mestre Pan Qing Fu

Mestre Pan Qin Fu, artista marcial e estrela do Wushu Chinês, radicado no Canadá. Foi durante o evento de Baltimore, que tivemos o prazer de conhecer o famoso Mestre do mítico filme "Shaolin Temple" e do mais recente "Iron Silk". A qualidade das fotos deve-se à máquina descartável que comprámos para registar o momento.

Master Pan Qin Fu, martial artist and Chinese Wushu movie star, living in Canada. It was during the event in Baltimore, which we had the pleasure of knowing the famous master of the mythical movie "Shaolin Temple" and the more recent "Iron Silk." The quality of the photos is due to the disposable camera that we bought to record the moment.

Como na altura não tinha máquina, decidi comprar uma pequena máquina fotográfica descartável… E mãos à obra… Toca a fotografar para mais tarde recordar, estes momentos únicos. Por incrível que pareça, de todo rolo, só duas fotos sobreviveram, as que tiramos com Mestre Pan Qing Fu… As únicas fotos da nossa aventura por Baltimore!

As at the time we had no camera, so I decided to buy a small disposable one... and “digging in”… we took as much pictures as possible to record these unique moments. As incredible as it may seem, the entire film, only two photos survived, the ones we take with the Master Pan Qing Fu ... The only photos of our adventure in Baltimore!

Cartão do Mestre Pan, onde exibe o tratamento da mão direita, resultante de bater numa placa de ferro milhares de vezes por dia. Daqui advém o seu nome "Punho de Ferro" pelo qual é conhecido no meio marcial.

Não participámos, só vimos e queríamos ver tudo. Eram demasiadas novidades para estarmos com a cabeça em participar no que quer que fosse. Desde o Sanshou (Kickboxing Chinês), Qin Da (Semi-Contacto), Tuishou (Empurrar com as Mãos) até ao Suaijiao (Luta Chinesa) eram um rol de acção sem parar.

We didn’t participate, we just wanted to see everything. There were too many novelties for us. Since the Sanshou (Chinese Kickboxing), the Qin Da (Semi-Contact), Tuishou (Pushing Hands) to the Suaijiao (Chinese Fight) it was a non-stop action.

Em 1995 foi dos anos mais impressionantes na abertura de mentalidades: ver esta realidade, foi um choque para nós, mas fez-nos muito bem. Trazíamos forças e inspiração para o longo desafio que tínhamos pela frente. Sem dúvida, foi a nossa maior inspiração para lutar e não desistir. Acredito que depois deste episódio, muito mudou nas nossas cabeças e muita luz se fez ao fundo do túnel.

In 1995 it was the most impressive year regarding in the opening of our minds: see this reality, it was a big shock for us. We brought strength and inspiration for the long challenge that we had to face. Without any doubt, it was our biggest inspiration to fight and not give up. I believe that after this episode, many things changed and some light appeared in our heads.

Karate Versus Kungfu

Depois de dar uma vista de olhos no meu baú de memórias, lá encontrei algo que mostra o espírito Kungfu à vinte anos atrás, muito antes da YMAA: Campeonato Inter-Estilos das escolas de Kungfu e karate do professor Cláudio Fung. Estes eram realizados com regras de Karate; na verdade não havia muita diferença entre o que se fazia em combate no Karate e no Kungfu naqueles tempos. Enfim, era o Kungfu da altura, muito duvidoso. Contudo, as pessoas eram fantásticas, com poucos recursos técnicos faziam pequenas grandes habilidades.

After glancing at my trunk of memories there I found something, that shows the spirit of Kungfu twenty years ago very much before the YMAA: Inter Styles Championship of Kungfu and karate schools from the teacher Cláudio Fung. Carried out with rules of Karate, in fact there was no great difference between what was done in combat of Karate and in the Kungfu in those times. It was the Kungfu at that time, very doubtful. But the persons were fantastic, with few technical resources hey were doing small great skills.

Apesar das diferenças entre o Karate e o Kungfu, lá íamos ganhando os primeiros lugares. Mas a amizade e o respeito sempre foi grande. Mariano uma das grandes referencias do Karate da altura.

In spite of the differences between the Karate and the Kungfu, we were scoring the first places. But the friendship and the respect was always big. Mariano one of the great references of the Karate at that time.

Foram inúmeros os alunos que passaram pelas escolas de Kungfu da Amadora e Almada do Professor Cláudio Fung. Embora as caras permaneçam familiares, os nomes são mais complicados de relembrar... Luís Martins, Pedro Rodrigues, Miguel Palma, Hugo Dias, Paulo Gonçalves, António Vilela, Mário Carvalho, Celso Barja, Marco Vieira, Irmãos Tempero, Carlos Sousa, Rui Mourão, Tony Chee, Luís Ferreira, Aziza Amade, Gonçalo Cigarro, Sandra Gonçalves, Miguel "Barbeiro", Marisa Mestre, Jorge Pinheiro, Mariano "Karaté", António Oliveira (Director Revista Bushido), Carlos Lee (Revista Bushido), David Conches (Espanha), entre muitos outros…. É incrível ver as gerações de alunos que se cruzaram aqui!

Many students have passed through Professor Cláudio Fung Kungfu schools in Amadora and Almada. Even though the faces are easy to remember, the names are more complicated… Luís Martins, Pedro Rodrigues, Miguel Palma, Hugo Dias, Paulo Gonçalves, António Vilela, Mário Carvalho, Celso Barja, Marco Vieira, Tempero brothers, Carlos Sousa, Rui Mourão, Tony Chee, Luís Ferreira, Aziza Amade, Gonçalo Cigarro, Sandra Gonçalves, Miguel "Barbeiro", Marisa Mestre, Jorge Pinheiro, Mariano "Karaté", António Oliveira (Director Bushido Magazine), Carlos Lee (Bushido Magazine), David Conches (Spain) and many others…It's incredible to see the various generations of students that have crossed their path here!

Luís Martins, sem dúvida dos alunos mais antigos e dos maiores seguidores da antiga escola, assim como dos maiores impulsionadores da YMAA em Portugal. Miguel Palma, um dos primeiros alunos, juntamente com o Pedro Rodrigues, a conhecer pessoalmente o Mestre Yang, em Março de 1992, em Paris. Da minha geração, apenas o Celso e o Marco. Todos os outros pertenciam a uma geração muito mais antiga.

Luís Martins, no doubt one of the older students and follower of the old school, as well as one of the major movers of YMAA in Portugal. Miguel Palma, one of the first students, with Pedro Rodrigues, to known personally the Master Yang, in March 1992, in Paris. Only, Celso and Marco, belong to my generation, all the others belonged to another one much older.

Longe do meu pensamento que um dia iria chegar onde cheguei nas Artes Marciais Chinesas, juntamente com Pedro. Para mim já passaram 20 anos desde que começei a treinar Kungfu na Sociedade Filarmónica e no Recreio Artístico da Amadora (SFRAA) em Novembro de 1988.

Far from my mind, if one day I could reach, with Pedro, so far in the Chinese Martial Arts. For me, 20 years passed since I started training Kungfu in Sociedade Filarmónica Recreio Artístico of Amadora in November of 1988.

Hugo Dias, Mestre Yang, Jwing-Ming e Vítor Casqueiro

O Hugo foi durante muito tempo o meu parceiro de treino, tendo a nossa amizade permanecido no tempo até aos dias de hoje. Passamos bons momentos juntos a treinar. Ambos terminamos a nossa graduação final (cinto negro) na antiga escola e começamos tudo de novo na YMAA.

Hugo was for long time my partner of training and our friendship still to remains until now. We shared great moments and fun training together; and we both accomplished, at the same time, our final graduation (black belt) from the old school and we restarted everything from scratch in YMAA.

Depois de anos a fio a treinar, tudo recomeçou da estaca zero. "Posição de Engolir": uma das posições fundamentais das Artes Marciais Chinesas.

After many years of training, everything went back from start. "Swallow Stance": is one of the fundamentals stances of Chinese Martial Arts.
